“Captain’s Log… Supplemental”

Captain’s Log… Supplemental:

“We have encountered a rare phenomena in what appears to be a parallel universe to that of our home planet…Earth.  The away team, led by Dr McCoy, have reported that there is a strange, new life-form on the planet surface that appears crystalline in nature”…

“My God Bones, what IS that thing?  Set phasers to stun…Spock, analysis?’

“Captain, it appears to be some kind of miniature dirty snowman…scanning… scanning, the anomaly appears to consist of nasty slushy and blackened snow, origin: Austin Texas, an area that witnessed a small flurry of snow today, I suggest caution Jim.”

Snow falling on Cedar.

By the time the Hobbits got home from school, most of the snow had unfortunately melted, but there were a few select areas still harboring the white matter…

The hearts of the sago palms turned out to be a good snow collection points. Photon torpedoes.

Fast and nimble small hands formed the dirty snow, she did not care, oh no, she was on a snowman mission, and oh yes, she was hell-bent on creating one.  She reached into her pocket and like a seasoned magician produced a baby carrot. (I have no idea where that even came from, or when she got it from, but a carrot she had).

I was really trying not to laugh when she forced the nose into the dirty slush-ball, she was serious, she was sculpting like Henry Moore, very Wallace and Gromit, complete with icicles hanging from his nose!

Then came the eyes and the “feet”, I had to turn away, it was reminding me of a crazed “Hedwig” from Harry Potter.

She thought he was best thing ever…”Frosty” (predictable I know), was then carefully picked up and gently placed into the relative safety of a wooden salad bowl (she anticipated that her brother wanted to stomp on poor Frosty’s head). Her actions were logical!

If he is “not there” in the morning, I anticipate some pre-school remorse.

Dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a miracle worker! There’s nothing more can be done for it, poor thing. I fear it’s early demise will happen by 0800, stardate 20100223.

“Perhaps we can put into a sort of suspended animation Jim, (the refrigerator) let me check my Tri-Corder to better understand the snow-creatures biology”.

Not only adorable and hilarious, ESP, but apparently the Captain did a little time-traveling when he made the post…. the snow didn’t start falling until the morning of the 23rd but Frosty appeared on Stardate 22nd LOL

Are those eyes made of pop-beads? Very creative!

Haha too funny and very astute Annie. I was hoping nobody would notice this interface glitch on the Enterprise’s bridge. The crew and I went into a temporal flux today that according to Mr Spock, distorted the time/space continuum, sending us all back in time twenty-four hours. I had to go through the entire ridiculous “snowman” building event again today, which made it even funnier!

That is a hoot. Your photo makes it look like a scary giant, but it’s really a wee little thing, isn’t it?! My neighbor made a snow woman with a pink scarf and hot pink cat eye sunglasses! My 7 yr old tried to make one but it was falling apart by then. But we were able to have a real snowball fight which was great fun.

    Hi Diana.
A wee little owl, ach, I mean snowman, Frosty was indeed. William Wallace jumped down from his concrete pedestal briefly, trampled across the snow (which incidentally he loved) just to see if Frosty was any threat! But by the time he made it over with his small concrete feet, Frosty was already safe in his salad bowl.

Snow can do that to ya…
I loved last summer’s Star Wars movie… Karl Urban was so much fun as Bones. Unless one of my adult children walked off with her, somewhere in this house is my Counselor Troi action figure. Wrong series, but at one time she was my heroine.

Fabulous snowman!! Really – it takes creativity and determination to pull one together like that. Congrats!

Also, the patch looks quite nice with a white blanket of snow. :)

    Hi Ms. S.
I tried to be really discreet with the camera, but I was laughing so hard I kept shaking it. After getting out of the car from school she went straight through the house and started silently constructing the owl, er snowman. It was really funny to watch.
It makes a really nice change to see things all white (instead of the blistering orange of Mars) for a change.

Annie, I hope for your sake no die-hard Trekkie’s read this comment…Star Wars? (shakes finger slowly, tsk, tsk, tsk) This just keeps getting funnier and funnier!
I loved the latest Trek movie too, though you have probably guessed this by now. I agree he made the best “Bones,” he totally had the part down.

I thought you were going to say Counselor Troi’s “outfit”! I was about to say: “alrighty then”!!!
Those dark mysterious empathic pop-bead eyes.
    Very funny Annie.

Now that is just about the most precious little snow man I have ever seen, but he wasn’t long for this planet was it? You would think we had never seen snow before the way we all rushed out with our cameras- then again, maybe the hobbits hadn’t.

    Quite the charmer he was.
You are correct, my eldest was too young and does not remember seeing snow, that is why she was determined to make something out of it before it disappeared for yet another three or four years. I haven’t checked but I am sure there are only a couple of eyes and a small carrot left of him at this point. RIP black slush man / owl, oh whatever you were.

Had me going there for a minute with the big fellow’s picture – couldn’t imagine enough snow to make frosty – baby carrot nose and all. Takes an artist’s imagination and sheer determination to create such a creature with so little of the white stuff left.

  • ESP Feb 24, 2010, 9:54 am

    Hi Gail.
She actually went all around the patch gathering snow from here and there in her salad bowl before she actually got down to “crafting” the black slush man. She hardly said a word as she was making him…too funny. Someone wanted to jump on him so bad, I could tell, you can imagine what hell that would have unleashed. “Yes, best put him in the salad bowl…that is a good idea.”

Totally adorable. My mid-twenties daughter and her friend (currently both visiting here) who both grew up in Austin and now live where it snows regularly (Michigan and Colorado) STILL had to get out yesterday and take photos of the snow here in Austin. Maybe the idea of snow wasn’t novel but the idea of snow in AUSTIN was. I suppose photos is the slightly more grown version of snowperson building?

  • ESP Feb 24, 2010, 10:59 am

    Hi TD.
I had to capture the black slush man on camera and immortalize him before he melted. I even broke my once a week posting schedule and I time-traveled apparently! Oh yes when it snows in Austin everyone goes a little nuts, look at Fox news/weather! In Scotland we used to build snowmen as large as five or six of us could push them, they would eventually became too heavy. Snow also meant that we got to skip school, sometimes for a whole week!

So, you were sick huh? Just couldn’t make it to the Garden Design a Go Go could you. My chance to meet ESPhilip and it’s gone. I waited out by the road for you to pick me up until I was almost late. I was the only guy there with twelve charming women. Huh, I guess it wasn’t too bad. I only screwed up once, I think. I met this little girl that has Mostly Weeds blog. I asked her if her mother brought her. She looked like she was 15 yrs. old. Honest she did. She looked at me like I was stupid and told me she was 35. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I apologized profusely. We got along great guns after that so I didn’t feel as stupid.

It was a fun time and you need to make the next one. It was nice to put faces with the blogs. Well, all but my favorite blog. Maybe one day.

  • ESP Feb 28, 2010, 3:05 pm

Were and still am Bob. What I thought was cedar fever turned into something much more sinister I am afraid, sniff. My youngest hobbit sneezed right in my face four nights ago and I think that did it! (he had been sick). All I have done for the last three days is, well nothing…it drives me crazy, I am the worst sick person ever, I really am, poor Leah.
I was really disappointed to miss the event, but I know there will be plenty more, and yes I will make the next one. cough.
Very funny on the 15/35 front, some lucky people are just like that. Glad you had a fun aaachoooo! time.
    Cheers Bob.

…and you even missed my birthday. Bummer all around!

  • ESP Feb 28, 2010, 9:42 pm

    Hi JJ
I did, and I really wanted to be there, yielding an extraordinary array of musical instruments.
I really need to be in one of those temporary isolation tents though (think ET)… so I have formed a rudimentary version myself with sheet polythene thrown over my lazy boy, weighted down with moss boulders.
    “Sick” of this miserable nonsense.

How BEAUTIFUL The Patch looks in the snow!!!
And I am always impressed with your Girl Hobbit; the determination to make a snowman out of dirty slush shows how totally punk rock she is.
Snow in Austin – so cool, but I still freak out about the PLANTS! Do I just need to get OVER that? How does your hellstrip sago look? the bamboo? The mexican lime/ The barbados cherry?
I know this garden almost as well as I know my own, and I WORRY!
Tell me how they are or I might not be able to sleep….
    G.!

  • ESP Mar 1, 2010, 10:28 pm

    Hi G.
It did make a nice change to see the Patch all covered in a rare Texas snow flurry, the snow was tame compared to the freezes we have had this year. The Patch has pulled through pretty good for the most part, the barbados cherry and the dwarf bottles have had the hardest time, fingers crossed for the spring. All the bamboos in the Patch have been stripped of all foliage, they made a real mess, but I am sure they will bounce right back into the action when it warms up a little. The hellstrip sago strangely did better then all the rest, I guess due to it’s maturity rather than it’s exposed location.
Don’t worry G…all is well in the Patch.

And she is punk rock! She totally rocks.
    Sleep well.
